Buying a car does not necessarily mean it has to be brand new with the latest model. Of course, the functionality and efficiency of the car are more essential than its aesthetic appeal. This mindset has been ingrained in me by my father since when I was a child. As a result, I found my passion for a second-hand car in Singapore. And since then, I’ve been looking for car dealers to buy used cars.

In my experience with second-hand cars, there are pros and cons I’ve learned along my journey. You may be questioning my decision to buy a used car instead of a new one. However, there are surprising advantages I’ve gained and let me tell you about my journey. Furthermore, let this article show you the advantages of buying a used car and what to avoid when you are looking for one.

Advantages of Buying Used Cars

  1. Saves You Money

Needless to say, a second-hand car is cheaper compared to a new one. So, what did I gain from this? Well, let’s say, a new car costs S$ 20,000, and a used car at S$ 10,000. If you look at its usability, it’s going to be just the same. I’m always thinking that I’m paying for its functionality rather than impressing other people. See, I can even buy two used cars with S$ 20,000 compared to a new one.

This way, I can save money for other personal needs, and avoid unnecessary spending only because I want the latest model. I know I may sound too practical, but practising this spending habit will benefit you in the long run as well.

  1. Avoid Unnecessary Fees

As mentioned above, you can also save money when you buy a used car by avoiding unnecessary fees. Beware of hidden fees such as shipping charges, destination fees, and dealer preparation. According to my experience, there are additional fees with second-hand cars, however, it will only cost a few hundred dollars.

Whenever I look for a used car for sale in Singapore, I always ask the dealers if there are additional fees. This way, I can accurately budget the money I need before buying. Additionally, the customization costs are less expensive in second-hand cars compared to new ones.

  1. Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

Another advantage of second-hand cars is that there are certified pre-owned vehicles. Meaning, used cars have been inspected, refurbished, and certified by the manufacturer that the vehicles are of high-quality. So, I know that I don’t have to worry about the quality and its usability. What’s better is that a certified second-hand car can go along with a new one!

Also, a certified second-hand car has a warranty and other benefits. This way, I can utilize my warranty if I need a repair service. So, I can save my savings for other purposes.

  1. More Environmental Friendly

If you look at the bigger picture, buying a new car will take a longer process from manufacturing to shipment, which means more resources are going to be needed. New and second-hand cars are both emitting carbon dioxide but newer vehicles use lithium-ion, lead-acid, or nickel-metal hydride batteries that have a more negative impact on the environment.

As a second-hand car enthusiast, I’ve always noticed how wasted if a used car is ignored. For me, there are benefits and advantages when you buy a used car in Singapore. I know that with this kind of thinking I’ve saved the environment by recycling an old vehicle

  1. Find Unique Vehicles

Sadly, some iconic cars have been discontinued in the market. Compared to new cars, iconic vehicles may not have advanced tech features, but they hold a more special place in my heart. Iconic vehicles such as Volkswagen, Tamaraw FX or any sleeper car are what I’m usually looking for. Luckily, they can be found with some car dealers in Singapore.

Reminder When Buying Used Cars

Indeed, buying a used car is an investment, however, there are things you need to consider before deciding which car to buy. The first step is you need to organize your finances before shopping for a second-hand car. After that, remember to test drive your car before you sign a deal.

After the test drive, let the car be checked by a mechanic before purchasing. And Lastly, you can always walk away if you don’t like the deal.
