According to Carean Oh, an educator in Singapore, parents or guardians should have a stake in their child’s education. Is your child having difficulties in their schoolwork? Do they avoid talking about school and other school-related issues? Do they have a hard time studying and get easily distracted? If that’s the case, then your child may be having a hard time at school. School-related stress is commonly cited by children to be one of the biggest issues for them.

School issues can even extend to other parts of their lives. For example, school-related problems can also cause:

  1. Health issues. Some students even stop eating, have a hard time sleeping, or become anxious because of grades.
  2. Misbehaviour. Doing poorly in school or having problems in school can cause your child to lash out.
  3. Tendencies to become distracted or bored with schoolwork. Running into issues in school can cause your child to lose interest in it.

If you notice that your child has any of these tendencies, they may already have lost motivation in school. But once they’ve lost interest, it’s hard to earn it back. Don’t worry, if you help them learn how to motivate themselves in their early childhood development, they’ll be able to deal with their problems more easily.

Here are a few tips for parents looking to motivate their young ones.

  1. Make the school a friendly environment. Your child may benefit from having a guidance counsellor or educational consultant in Singapore to help them.
  2. Make your child feel responsible. Nothing good comes from a helicopter parent. Make yourself available for assistance but don’t hover.
  3. Work with kids at home. Set aside time for them to work on school projects and be accommodating.
