Explanation of Electrical Wiring Colour Coding System
Even though residential and industrial electrical wiring have differences when it comes to insulation, voltage load, and installation, they are still wires. It means that when you open some industrial electrical panel components, you will be bewildered by the numbers of different colours. Does black have the same purpose as red? Hot
Black
This colour of industrial electrical wiring is for hot wires, mostly used in residential circuits.
The word “hot” means that it can carry electricity from industrial electrical panel components to a particular destination.
Warning: Never used black as a neutral or ground wire.
Red
Just like black, red has the same features but often used as the second one in the 240-watt installation.
White with Black or Red Tape
When this colour has black or red markings, it means you can use it as hot wires.
For neutral usage, the black markings should be in multiple loops.
Ground
Bare Copper
Mostly used for groundings, its features provide a safe pathway for power to travel. Using this ensures no electrocution will happen.
Green
Not as frequent as bare coppers. But green ones are still used to most electrical devices like electrical switchboard components.
Warning: Never use this for a different purpose other than grounding.
Neutral
White or Grey
To know it for neutral purposes, make sure it has no markings or wrapped in electrical tape.
Older wires might have them, but new ones usually come as plain white.
Warning: Whites could potentially shock or injure you. So, always wear PPE gears.
Trivia: You can use blue and yellow as hot wires inside an electrical conductor, but mostly used in a light switch box.
